Last day of LOAD

Today is the last day of the January "Layout A Day" challenge that I have been participating in. I did a really simple layout but one that I think captures William's spirit perfectly. He's such a crazy kid! I did complete the challenge. I did one scrapbook page a day for 31 days. I am amazed that I was able to keep up with it! A new group has begun on another website that will continue this challenge. Although I would love to be able to do a page a day I simply don't have the time. I did sign up to be a part of the group but will only commit to one layout a week.

I am still doing the "Deck of Me" challenge. That one involves a weekly prompt and alteration of a playing card. I am completely caught up on that one as well.

Alright, must get ready for school...have a lovely day!

Dullest blog?

This scrapbook layout is inspired by a challenge on the Big Picture Scrapbooking board that I've been active with since the first of the year. One of the other participants challenged us to scrapbook one of the dullest blog entries. You know I had to pick coffee! The journaling reads:

1. I had a mug of coffee sitting on my desk.
2. I reached out my hand and picked up the mug.
3. I took a sip of the coffee.
4. I returned the mug to its former position on my desk.

How's that for a dull blog??? haha

I miss The Office...

So I've added a playlist to my site with only The Office theme...so I can hear it every time I come here...

No go...

In all of my years of academia I have never missed a day of class because of weather (I even rode my bicycle in freezing rain to UNCW). Today will be my first. This morning, about 30 minutes before I was about to leave for class, the local station starting warning people about numerous accidents on the roadways. We have freezing temperatures and light rain....a perfect combination for black ice. UT is on 2 hour delay but I'm just not risking it. I love school but I love my life even more. I'm staying home....

As of this blog entry the City of Knoxville has reported 200+ accidents in the few hours that people have been on the roads. We've even had a report of an ambulance flipped over with a patient in it...

10:00am: Just stepped outside to look at conditons...my driveway is a solid sheet of ice...

Deck of Me Challenge

Not only am I doing the "Layout a Day" challenge but I am also now doing the "Deck of Me" challenge...because you know I have all the free time in the world..right?!?! I don't know...I think it's a way for me to stay motivated and explore my creative side. Don't get me wrong..I love science...LOVE LOVE science...but I am a creative person as well.

So...to describe the "Deck of Me" challenge...you buy a deck of cards and you follow the prompts given out by the moderator of the group each week (Monday). You create a little work of art on that 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 canvas. How hard can that be??

52 cards+52 weeks a year=coincidence?? (there, I've used up all my math skills for today)

If you want to join it is never too late! This week (week 2) the prompt is to highlight a favorite quote that you like right now. With the GSA abstract deadline on Monday, this quote is my favorite at the moment. Please...feel the pain of trying to write 2,000 characters and have it make sense...

Last day of freedom...

Classes start back tomorrow. I can hear your thoughts now...."So René, what fun and exciting things have you got planned for today..your last day of freedom?" Well...ahem...laundry and grocery shopping at Walmart top the list today. *cringe*

Also working on a new acrylic book today for a class I'm teaching. When I looked at my MSN horoscope for today it said...

Take advantage of the creative energy in the air, dear Virgo. Be sure to keep your hands moving and your imagination flowing toward something fun and artistic. If you find yourself beginning to doubt your work, you may fall quickly down an endless spiral of creative blockage. Don't let this happen. Create without constantly judging the quality or the outcome of your work. Give yourself free rein to open up and explore.

Coincidence? Is this telling me that going to Walmart and doing laundry will sap the creative energy out of me??? haha

Salmon Cakes...

Last night I made salmon cakes for dinner following a recipe by Martha Stewart. I've posted a link to the recipe below. Salmon cakes were a childhood favorite of mine. My mom used to make them with mashed potatoes and I loved them with pickled beets. Although Martha's recipe was good, it wasn't my mom's. I thought the recipe had a bit too much mustard...maybe she was going for the crab cake taste. Anyway, they weren't bad but I probably wouldn't make them again.
Here's the recipe if you're interested...

Love this song....

I could listen to this song over and over. It really is one of my favorites. The scenes from Grey's Anatomy are good too. Who, besides me, misses Dr. Burke, Finn, and Denny? Finn would be just my type...outdoorsy, adventurous, loves animals.....mmmm...he's just nummies!! I once had a dream that I'd marry an outdoorsman type like Finn....wonder if he's available....

One little word...

Ali Edwards, a scrapbook/life artist, has instituted a yearly prompt called "One Little Word." To explain, she states:

"A single word can be a powerful thing. It can be the ripple in the pond that changes everything. It can be sharp and biting or rich and soft and slow. Last year I began a tradition of chosing one word for myself each January - a word that I can focus on, mediate on, and reflect upon as I go about my daily life. Last year my word was something I wanted to bring into my life in a more tangible way. My word was play."

This year she is doing the challenge again. My chosen word this year is "proactive." The journaling a the bottom of my layout tells all. It reads:

"Please don't tell anyone...this needs to remain our little secret...I have a slight tendency to be LAZY! The main issue with this habit is that I cannot afford to be lazy at this point in my academic career. I have 3 1/2 years to complete this Ph.D. and I must get it done. So, my word of inspiration for this year is "PROACTIVE" meaning that I will be more involved in creating the life that I want. This isn't just for academia but for other facets in my life. I will be proactive with my health, with traveling, and with exploring new things."

I think this word fits me well. For the few who read this blog...what would your one little word be this year??

The Gratitude Campaign...

Please watch this brief movie....you will be glad that you did....

My mom taught me how to ride rollercoasters (well, not MY mom..just read on)!!

Today I got a message from my son telling me to go look at a new video he'd posted on his myspace page. It was great and I'll post it later for you. But while I was there I decided to look through his pictures and I ran across this one with the caption "My mom taught me how to ride rollercoasters!" Now...first off let me say that William is the guy on the right hand side of the picture wearing the white shirt with his hands WAY up in the air. And yes, that is EXACTLY how I taught my boys to ride rollercoasters...hands way up and screaming like a mad-person!

Back up 18 years....William is terrified of rollercoasters. So we're heading to Los Angeles (because we lived in San Diego) for a Garth Brooks concert. While we were there we decided to go to Six Flags Magic Mountain. Having once been a member of the roller coaster club, I wanted my boys to be able to enjoy coasters as much as I do. So, Richard is all for riding the coasters (he's always been a daredevil) but William is so upset because he's scared and doesn't want to go on the coaster. So I tell him that I've picked an easy one and that he can ride with me in the same car and I'll hold his hand while we ride it. He agrees (he's always been quite gullible). Anyway, so we're on Revolution at Magic Mountain and we get to the loop (yes, I said loop) and William looks at me terrified. You see, I'd lied to him and told him this was just an easy-peasy roller coaster with no big things in it. His eyes were as big as saucers and he was shaking! I told him "oops...I forgot there was a loop in this one"...and down the hill we went into the loop and back out. We pulled into the station, we got out of the cars (Richard yelling "YEA! YEA!!" repeatedly) and William looks at me....and said....LET'S GO AGAIN!!! By the end of the day both of my boys were sitting in the front seat of every roller coaster at Magic Mountain with their hands raised fully in the air the whole time. They've been roller coaster fans ever since.

It's things like that that, and this picture above, that make a Mom darn tootin' proud.....

Thermodynamics and my lack of motivation....

I was surfing the net the other day and came across this "Fifth law of thermodynamics" and seriously had to laugh my hiney off! The first 1/2 of the geochemistry class I just took was all about thermodynamics...and we all know how much that class killed me!! Anyway, just had to share. I think I'm going to print it out for my office.

Not doing much today. I really need to get working on some stuff for school but am lacking some serious motivation! I'd rather scrapbook. I sent some pictures in to Sams the other day but don't want to go outside in the 12° weather to pick them up. I'm heading to the local scrapbook store on Saturday so I think I'll just do it then.

Did anyone else notice that a barrel of oil hit $100 yesterday? I'm thinking $4 a gallon for gas is not too far off in the future. This country is in for some serious issues.....

Snow!

Doesn't look like a lot but it was really coming down last night. My very first Tennessee snow!

A little thought for today:

This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever; in its place is something that you have left behind...let it be something good.

Resolutions...

Tis the season for resolutions...fa la la la la la la la la. This year I have just a couple - they are:

1. Try to incorporate more of my hobby into my daily life. In order to do that I have signed up for a "page a day" challenge on Big Picture Scrapbooking. I have given you the link if you'd like to participate as well. My first layout is to the left. The class is free but you have to register to be able to see the group and the goals. Also, when you get to the paying part you'll see the class costs $0.00. I think it will be fun and I am up to the challenge...and the $0.00 will help me with my next goal.

2. Shop my stash! Yes, that means not buying any more scrapbooking supplies, except adhesives, until I get through some of the hoards of supplies I have. I'm going on a scrapbooking diet!

3. Organize my scrapbook supplies and office. I don't have enough space for all of my stuff so I'm going to buy some more Ikea bookcases for my office.

4. Remove people in my life who bring me down or make me feel as if I'm not good enough or somehow don't live up to their expectations of me. I've got enough pressure with school and it causes me needless heartache. I'm not perfect...and neither are you....

5. Rediscover my love of movies. It has been forever since I've been to the movie theater and I've missed some great films. This year I will go to the movies at least once a month.

That's it...five is good, and probably more than I can handle anyway.
