Follow your bliss...

When you are no longer compelled by desire or fear -- when you simply follow your bliss -- doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors -- and the world will step in and help.

Smile, Breathe, and Go Slowly...

I have been feeling really stressed lately as I make my way through my really crazy days. It takes a toll on me when I don't give myself "productive" down time. I'm sure you're asking yourself "what in the heck is productive down time?" Well, I have a tendency to just sit...I mean really sit...and do nothing at all that enriches my life. Things that would enrich my life include, but are definitely not limited to, scrapbooking, reading, or something else that makes me feel good about myself. So I was beebopping around the internet the other night and came across a blog entitled "12 essential rules to live more like a Zen monk." I liked what this guy said and although I'm not sure that some of these tips are practical in the life of a graduate student they are helpful. I'll list the abreviated version here but you can click on the link above to read in full.

1. Do one thing at a time.
2. Do it slowly and deliberately.
3. Do it completely.
4. Do less.
5. Put space between things.
6. Develop rituals.
7. Designate time for certain things.
8. Devote time to sitting.
9. Smile and serve others.
10. Make cleaning and cooking become meditation.
11. Think about what is necessary.
12. Live simply.

I'm starting with #1...this morning I scrapbooked...and did nothing else...and that, my friends, is why it is now 1:16pm and I am still in my jammies. I think I will finish this and go take a shower.

Salthenge...

One of my friends at school, Steven, has a habit of building "Stonehenges" out of anything he finds that will work. Today he built Salthenge. You gotta love it!!

Because I'm crazy like that!

I was wasting time the other day (I'm sure you are SHOCKED as I so rarely waste time..haha) and found a link on the front page of MSN that I just had to go to. You upload a picture of yourself and they superimpose it onto this body and it dances to 70's music. You even get to choose the clothes, hat, and lips (if you want to change yours). How flippin cool is that??? So, you know I had to...and the results are above. I'm just a dancin fool...yea, baby!!

Here's the link. Go ahead...you know you wanna!!

I SOOOOOOOOO want one of these for my office!!

Card Challenge Week 12

This week the card challenge prompt was "What is your theme song?" My card is below. I have really loved this challenge and hope she will do it next year as well.

You know, it's never too late to join the challenge. All you need to do is go here and send her an email.

Worked on one of my projects yesterday and got a lot of it done. Went out to dinner last night with a friend and she said something that I just thought was BRILLIANT! She said "I don't know why we always sweat getting these projects done. We always do..they always get turned in on time...so why do we worry so much?"

Too flippin cool!!!

Okay seriously, if you don't know I work with echinoderms (such as starfish, sea cucumbers, etc.) then you are way behind the times! Look at the adorable critters they have recently found in the New Zealand Antarctic waters!

They call the sea cucumber above "sea pig" onboard the boat. I want one!!
SERIOUSLY!!!

Look at these starfish!!

Happy Spring!

Took this picture this morning for my Month-of-Me book. So pretty...

It's so cute!!

Goofed off last night and played with some of my scrapbooking supplies. I bought this plain white Target mini mailbox from their Dollar Spot almost a year ago and hadn't done anything with it. Last night, feeling particularly crafty, I altered it. You know I had to use purple! Paper and the "r" is by Basic Grey, heart by Gin X, large brad is from the Spare Parts collection at Hobby Lobby. I can't remember who did the flower...I think it was Bazzil...I got it a year ago at the CK Convention in Charlotte.

How stinkin cute are these tags!?!?

Just an example of my tags. I've completed the writing all the way up to today but am waiting to print out a couple of pictures from Sam's Club. I store them up for a week or so and then send in as a large batch. The wallet size are perfect for this project!

"Gloomy, rainy, icky, stay-inside-and-work-on-homework-and-scrapbook" kinda day here...

Spring Break Baby!!!

Today is the FIRST day of my TWELVE day spring break...oh yea!!!! It's not going to be all fun and games, however. I'll be at the public library every day from 10am-4pm, except Sunday, working on the two projects I have going. First is my zoogeography project in which I am tracking the spread of the Crown-of-Thorns sea star. This is the starfish that is destroying the corals in the Great Barrier Reef. I'm looking at how man has influenced it's spread AKA invasion.

The second project is a statistics project and it uses the data I collected at UNCW this past winter. It will be presented in a poster at GSA (in April) and prepared for publishing. Oh, and it's my statistics class project as well. I think I passed the statistics test yesterday but won't know until I get back.

Did I mention it's spring break?? You can make your own pretty spring picture here. Just run your mouse across the background it the beautiful flowers pop up. Makes me happy...

Time to go frolick...

Not one good picture!!

First off, let me say that Ron White was wonderful!! Really really funny guy. I laughed so hard that my jaw hurt. I didn't get home until almost 1am. Jinkies!! So worth it though!! But I'm so mad that I wasn't able to get any clear shots of him. Although pictures were allowed, you had to turn off your flash. So, by the time the camera got enough light, Ron White had moved. Oh well, I'm still going to print this one out and scrapbook it along with my ticket.

Sunny here today but cold. I'm so ready for warmer weather. I'm struggling with the time change. I really hate daylight savings time. They need to abolish this law. It's just a pain in the hiney.

I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!

Tonight at 10:00pm I am going to see Ron White!! For those who don't know him, he's one of the members of the Blue Collar Comedy group with Jeff Foxworth, Bill Engvall, and Larry the Cable Guy. Ron White is my favorite of the bunch. He makes me laugh so hard I usually have to catch my breath repeatedly. Anyway, so I have a center 5th row ticket for tonight and I can't wait. The 10pm show is the late show and I figure he'll be extra funny then...plus it's an "over 21" show...woohoo!!

Snowing here this morning...it's so pretty.

The only thing between me and 10pm now is getting my study guide ready for my stats test this week.

I'll post pictures tomorrow!!

Seriously, yes, I did...

I did exactly what I said I was going to do! Today I got my hair cut and colored (don't you just love the picture? It's for my Month of Me mini-book.) Be advised, it was early in the morning and I have no makeup on...like that matters, right? ha ha

So after that was done I stopped by my local scrapbook store and $50 later walked out with some cool stuff, some for this mini-book! Seriously, I needed, NEEDED this stuff...really! You'll see why as you read on.

Afterwards, I went and had my nails done. I usually get a french manicure but it seems like the technique they use here doesn't last...not even a day! So, I've taken to doing my own paint job (and have gotten pretty good at it, thank you very much) but I am terrible at the shaping, filing, etc. So, it's worth the $12 in my book.

Stopped by Blockbuster...picked up "Into the Wild." I read this book about 6 months ago and loved it. It's a true story. You should check it out.

Next I stopped by the grocery store and picked up the fixings for corn chowder and chicken Parmigiana. I'm going to cook it in the crockpot this week thanks to the recipe from one of my favorite blogs, A Year of Crockpotting.

So I know you're thinking...."René, why did you need to spend $50 at the scrapbook store????" Well, we've got snow on the way and I wanted to make sure I had fun stuff to do even though I am not planning on going out anytime this weekend.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

Things I am grateful for:
1. My local scrapbook store. The great owners there feed my fix.
2. Deborah, who sent me a link to a really cool workshop today.
3. Patti, who got a couple of papers I needed from UNCW's interlibrary loan
4. Brownie mix
5. Snow! (so I can stay home without feeling even one teensy-weensy-eensy bit guilty)

Coming up for air...

I love going to conferences...really I do....but the amount of work that needs to be done when you get back makes you really rethink your trip. I have been pulling 13 hour days to try to get homework done...and even at that I didn't finish part C on my statistics homework. I just couldn't do it and get the homework turned in by 5:00pm. I ran up the stairs at 4:59 to make sure it was in the professor's mailbox by that time.

No classes tomorrow. Instead, I'm having my hair cut/colored, manicure, and an eyebrow wax...before I go grocery shopping and then return home to work like a dog....

Things I'm grateful for:
1. Richard texting me tonight about our trip to Castle Hayne Quarry a couple of years ago where he found sharks teeth.
2. That my statistics homework got turned in on time.
3. Tentative plans for a poster made for the annual GSA meeting in Houston.
4. Starbucks, that they rescued me this afternoon with a cup of coffee and a piece of lemon pound cake when I needed it most.
5. Rhiannon, who passed her dissertation defense...she shall now be referred to as Dr. Mayne (YOU ARE SO AWESOME GIRL!!)

I'll be back...

Geostatistics homework is killing me...seriously....ugh! Until I get back to regular posting later this week here is a really cool picture I took at the Air & Space Museum in DC. An infrared camera took your picture and put it on a TV screen. You know I had to take a picture of it. I look good in infrared....no? haha
